THE DISTILLERY
Angostura is one of the leading rum producers in the Caribbean, but its fame began with bitters intended for medical purposes and which today are recognized and valued in cocktails and cooking.
It was a German doctor Johann Gottlieb Benjamin Siegert who created the so-called "Angostura bitters", a gentian-based preparation combined with different vegetable spices, whose original purpose was to cure the dizziness of Simón Bolívar's armies. He resided in the city of Angostura in Venezuela.
In 1875 the family moved to Trinidad, where they created a small factory to market this remedy. This factory is the beginning of the great company that is today Angostura, producing, among other products, some of the most recognized rums in Venezuela.
