THE DISTILLERY
Cardhu was born in 1811 on a small farm in the Speyside region, the place where Helen Cumming began making whiskey in small quantities. The history of what is considered the first distillery in Scotland is strongly linked to the generosity of two women ahead of their time: Helen Cumming herself, who became the first woman in the world to run a whiskey distillery, and her daughter-in-law Elizabeth, who took over the brand in 1872 and brought Cardhu to every corner of the globe with her business skills. The Cumming family, who owned Cardhu for several generations, were the main drivers of the whiskey market until they made Speyside one of the main producing areas of Single Malt. To achieve this, the Cummingses, altruistic by nature, offered loans to the youth of their community, gave their distillate to friends and travelers, and passed on their knowledge about the production of their spirit, generous in nuances.
In 1893 Elizabeth and her son John Fleetwood Cumming decided to sell the company to John Walker & Sons. Cardhu thus became the first whiskey distillery of this firm.
Powerful but balanced flavor with aromas of sweet fruit, toffee, spices and cocoa.
