THE DISTILLERY
The history of Varela Hermanos SA dates back to 1908 when Mr. José Varela Blanco, a young Spanish emigrant, founded the San Isidro Mill in Pesé, the first sugar mill in the recently formed Republic of Panama.
The town of Pesé, established in the middle of the 18th century, is located in a fertile valley in the center of Panama, where the main activity of its population of about 10,000 inhabitants is sugarcane cultivation.
In 1936, acceding to the wishes of his 3 eldest sons, José Manuel, Plinio and Julio, Don José began the distillation of cane juice for the production of liqueurs, and distinguished himself from the beginning by products of extraordinary quality.
Since then, Varela Hermanos SA has maintained its leadership in the liquor industry.
Today, almost a century after Don José began operations in Pesé, and following the same family tradition, a third generation runs Varela Hermanos SA, the main liquor industry in Panama.
