The Glenlivet 15 Year Old gets its distinctive rich and exotic character from a selective maturation process in which a portion of the spirit is matured in French oak barrels. In fact, at The Glenlivet they were among the first to use French oak to make whiskey, a technique that has since been imitated around the world. The Limousin oak they use is cut in the Dordogne region of France, where it is often used to mature cognacs. Its low gravity allows the whiskey to sink deep into the wood, and how long the whiskey matures in the casks is carefully controlled so as not to overpower the desired result: a unique and pleasing spiciness.
