THE CELLAR
Valduero is a family business and one of the first of the Ribera del Duero designation of origin, which was established in 1984 in Gumiel de Mercado (Burgos) by Gregorio García Álvarez.
In their beginnings as winemakers, they spent more than 5 years using old facilities in the town of Gumiel de Mercado, along with these facilities we acquired an old dilapidated press in the same town that we restored and put into operation its cave at a depth of 19 m that dates from the XVII century.
In said cave we only had the capacity to store 500 barrels, so we decided to expand said cave, and they came to have almost 1 km of tunnels dug more than 30 m deep, where we housed more than 1,000 barrels for the aging of Reservas and Large Reserves: Valduero “6 years” and Valduero “12 years”.
The point of maximum depth is 40 m underground, and this cave was once what is now the 1000 m2 tunnel for storing barrels.
In the extension of this cave, 1 year was used and those responsible were D. Gregorio García, President of Valduero and Yolanda García Viadero. For this we hired an Asturian specialist who drilled these tunnels with a mole machine.
Today they want to preserve this cave to commemorate that ancestors made wine in the old presses.
